Damiano Quaranta

"The pain raised from a difficult time just passed, and the visceral needs to communicate its soul guides the pictorial artisanship of Damiano Quaranta."

Roman artist, Damiano Quaranta, 29, lives and works in Castelli Romani, a green region close to the eternal city. After some years he left University and he felt his calling for art.

In the early stages Quaranta experimented with various art forms including clay sculpting, wood carving and a current method of his, metal oxidizing.  During this trial period with different materials, his recognition and credibility began once he closely followed painter, Pietro Perrone and worked with journalist, critic and art historian, Massimo Riposati on Amedeo Modigliani’s centennial anniversary of his Parisian exhibition, held at the university, Centro di Studi italo-francesi in Rome.

In 2017 the encounter with the eclectic journalist Alessandro Vitiello, who actually is his galerist. Last two expositions were “Metamorfosi” last june (AREA, Rome) and “Reazioni emotive in Ferro 26” (6-15 ottobre, Palazzo Bezzi, Ravenna).

Everything that Damiano Quaranta has created to date, comes from years of trial and error and experimenting with different styles that suit his creative flare. As well as the materials he began with, the most recent tool of choice is the rough material and somewhat medieval, iron. He moulds and shapes the iron using different methods; melting/burning over hot coals, corroding the layers with acid or oxidizing. The ways in which he manipulates the iron and achieves his final pieces are symbolic of the wounds, the overwhelming emotions that embody him and the story of the suffering in his life.

You can envision his routine as he sits in his workshop making his creations, in the same way Vulcano would weld weapons for Achille. The artist lives completely in his work, as his skin, seemingly burnt and dark with the ashes of the fire, is the same colour as the soul that lives within him. His gaze is gentle yet surly – perhaps indecipherable as he pursues the culmination of his creations. Living is only possible when he offers his most intimate thoughts, his feelings and listens to the process he goes through, when in his workshop, he says.

Damiano Quaranta doesn’t just play with iron or with fire, but instead offers himself to the judging eyes of the world, laying himself bare. He gives life to his fears, tests his limits and brings them to life through his craftsmanship.
